What the new age of mobile apps looks like

Phones are more powerful than ever, yet many apps feel heavier, noisier and more demanding every year. Endless notifications, cluttered screens, sign-up walls before you can do anything at all.

When we say Wapphub wants to create the new age of mobile apps, this is what we mean: apps that go back to doing one job brilliantly, and treat the people using them with respect. These five principles guide every one of our 100 apps.

1. Focus over features

Every app has a single core job. If a feature does not make that job easier, it does not ship. A smaller app that does one thing perfectly beats a bloated one that does everything badly.

2. Understandable at first tap

No manuals and no tutorials you have to skip. If someone needs instructions to get started, the design is not finished yet.

3. Fast and light

Small downloads, quick launches, smooth performance on everyday phones, not just the latest flagship. Speed is a feature, and so is respecting people’s storage and battery.

4. Privacy by default

An app should collect only what it needs to work. Each Wapphub app has its own clear privacy policy, and we never treat personal data as something to sell.

5. A personality of its own

Useful does not have to mean boring. Each app gets its own look, tone and small moments of delight, so it feels like something made by people, for people.

The new age of mobile apps is not about doing more. It is about doing the right thing, beautifully.

Holding ourselves to it

Principles only matter if you keep them when it is inconvenient. Before any Wapphub app is released, we check it against these five points. If it fails one, it goes back for another round.

Follow this blog to see how each new app lives up to them.
